Dr. Jean Chiar is an observational astronomer at the SETI Institute.  Her research involves the study of refractory grain material, such as silicates and hydrocarbons, that are present in the diffuse interstellar medium, and the formation, survival and processing of ices that form at the higher densities and lower temperatures in dark clouds. The overall goal of her research is to trace the formation pathways, growth and processing of dust grains as they cycle from the low-density regions of interstellar space to denser regions where stars and, eventually, planetary systems will form.

Here is a Huffington Post article about me and my work written by Gail Jacobs.
